Area: Education
Definition:
The rate of college-bound New York State high school graduates is based on secondary school reports of the number of seniors who intend to enroll in four-year and two-year post-secondary institutions as well as other post-secondary education programs both in and out-of-state, divided by the total number of graduating seniors.
Significance:
Educational attainment is strongly related to future earnings. An educated workforce is essential to a healthy state economy.
Findings:
The statewide rate of college bound high school graduates in 2007/08 (82.6%) is up from that in 1999/00 (77.6%). The percentage of New York City public high school graduates who are college bound has also increased from 61.9% in 1999/00 to 69.0% for 2007/08.
The counties in New York State, not including New York City, who had the lowest rate of college bound high school graduates were Chemung (75.8%), Hamilton (76.3%), and Yates (76.3%). The counties with the highest rates were Rockland (94.5%), Nassau (93.5%), and Putnam (93.5%).
The low college-bound percentages for New York City in 2005/06 (11.8%) can be attributable to a change in New York City's reporting of data for students whose post-graduation plans were unknown.
